Guatemala – Secoyón Water Distribution Initiative

Project Overview

The Secoyón, Guatemala water distribution initiative is a vital project designed to tackle the pressing issue of water scarcity in the rural community of Secoyón, situated in the municipality of San Cristobal Verapaz, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. This community, comprising around 480 individuals from the indigenous Pokomchi and Queqchi linguistic groups, has long struggled with inadequate access to clean and reliable water sources. Historically, the community depended on a spring, which dried up about five years ago, and subsequently on shallow artisanal wells and rainwater collection. However, these sources have proven insufficient, particularly during the six-month dry season, leading to frequent outbreaks of diarrheal diseases and instances of malnutrition among the residents.

To address these challenges, the project team is investigating the implementation of innovative rainwater and fog harvesting systems (as well as more standard methods including more productive wells). Fog harvesters are designed to capture and store water from the rainfall and fog that characterize the region’s climate, providing a sustainable and reliable source of potable water year-round. This project not only addresses an immediate health crisis but also empowers the community by providing them with the necessary infrastructure to sustain their water needs independently.
