A 501(c)(3) organization is a nonprofit recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as eligible for federal tax exemption because it operates exclusively for charitable, educational, scientific, or similar public-benefit purposes. To hold this title, the organization must not serve any private interests; earnings must be used solely for their charitable purpose, rather than benefiting individuals or shareholders.
For donors, this structure provides transparency and accountability. Contributions made to a 501(c)(3) organization are used to advance its mission and programs, rather than generating profit. Nonprofits are required to follow strict federal regulations governing how funds are used and reported, helping ensure that donations support their intended purpose.
Tax Deductions
One benefit of being 501(c)(3) status is that any donations made to Engineers Without Borders by the public are tax deductible. When filing federal income taxes, donors may claim a deduction for eligible contributions under 26 U.S.C. § 170, subject to IRS guidelines.
What Do Donations Look Like?
At Engineers Without Borders, donations directly support our projects, educational outreach, and the resources needed to carry out sustainable engineering initiatives in underserved communities. As a volunteer-driven organization, financial contributions are amplified by the time, expertise, and dedication of our members.
Donations can take many forms depending on the needs of the organization and the resources of the donor. Engineers Without Borders welcomes support in many ways, including:
- Your time and engagement through volunteering or participating in events
- Monetary donations that support project development and implementation
- Event support, such as providing venues, food, beverages, or musical performances
- Advocacy and outreach, including sharing our mission and work with others
Every contribution helps advance our mission and expand the impact of our projects.

Engineers Without Borders Denver operates primarily through the work of dedicated volunteers. Contributions help fund sustainable engineering projects, community partnerships, and the tools and resources needed for our volunteers to make a difference.
